The Wright County community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Cameron James “Jimmy” Mertens, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate whose life was tragically cut short in a drowning accident at Pleasant Lake in Corinna Township.
According to a statement released by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Pleasant Lake at approximately 8:18 p.m. on Monday, June 1, following reports of a possible drowning. Upon arrival, deputies located an overturned kayak near the public access and fishing dock on the lake’s north side. Witnesses at the scene reported that Cameron had been fishing alone from his kayak approximately 75 to 100 yards from the dock when he fell into the water.
Evidence gathered during the investigation, along with witness statements, helped authorities piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident. Members of the Wright County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team conducted a search and ultimately located Cameron in the lake. He was later identified as the victim of the tragic accident.
The loss has devastated Cameron’s family, friends, classmates, and community members. Affectionately known as “Jimmy,” he was remembered as a young man full of life, humor, and energy. Those who knew him describe someone who could make people laugh effortlessly and bring excitement and joy wherever he went. His personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Having recently graduated from high school, Cameron was preparing to begin an exciting new chapter in life. His sudden passing has left loved ones grieving not only the loss of who he was but also the future he had ahead of him.
In response to the tragedy, a fundraiser has been established to support Cameron’s father and siblings as they face funeral and memorial expenses and the emotional challenges that accompany such a profound loss. Community members have rallied around the family, offering donations, prayers, and words of comfort.
