Kerry Sheron Death – “Trump House” Assault: Thomas Caleb Butler arrest & charges after assault of 69-year-old Army veteran

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A 69-year-old Army veteran remains in critical condition following a brutal assault outside his Escondido home on Wednesday afternoon, an attack that has shocked residents across San Diego County.

The victim, identified as Kerry Sheron, was allegedly attacked around 2:15 p.m. on May 20, 2026, while sitting outside his residence, according to authorities. Sheron suffered severe injuries during the assault and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit fighting for his life.

Police arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler shortly after the incident. Butler has since been charged with attempted first-degree murder and is expected to appear in court for arraignment on Friday.

Investigators say a utility worker who witnessed the attack attempted to intervene and was also injured before officers arrived at the scene.

Sheron’s home is widely recognized in the Escondido community due to its prominent displays of American flags and pro-Trump banners, earning it the local nickname “The Trump House.” While the Escondido Police Department has not officially confirmed a motive behind the assault, Sheron’s wife believes the attack may have been politically motivated because of the decorations displayed on their property.

Public records indicate the suspect reportedly lives only a short distance away from the victim’s residence.

Family members say Sheron sustained devastating injuries in the attack. His wife described the veteran as having been “beaten nearly to death,” adding that doctors are uncertain whether he will survive.

The violent incident has sparked outrage and concern throughout the community, particularly given Sheron’s status as a military veteran and longtime resident. Neighbors and supporters have expressed shock over the severity of the attack and are calling for justice as the investigation continues.

Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the assault or whether more charges could follow. Detectives continue to investigate the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact the Escondido Police Department.

As of Thursday evening, Sheron remains hospitalized in critical condition.
