It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dennis James “DJ” Cox, a beloved husband, son, brother, and friend, who left us unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the age of 33. DJ’s warm spirit, unwavering faith, and dedication to his family and community will be cherished forever.
Born in Fresno, California, DJ was the son of Dennis Dean Cox and Kimberly Bidwell Cox. From a young age, he demonstrated intelligence, kindness, and a passion for learning. He graduated from Emerald High School in Greenwood, where he first developed his love for sports, community service, and leadership. DJ continued his education at the University of South Carolina, earning both his undergraduate degree and an MBA, exemplifying his commitment to growth and excellence.
Professionally, DJ was an accomplished leader in the technology sector. He served as Associate Director of AI Strategy and Implementation at Yovant Technologies in Columbia, where his innovative ideas and strategic insights contributed significantly to the company’s growth. Known for his dedication and integrity, DJ was a respected figure among colleagues and clients alike.
A devout member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Columbia, DJ exemplified faith and service. He was deeply involved in his church community, leading men’s Bible studies, offering spiritual guidance, and inspiring others through his unwavering devotion. His faith was the foundation of his life, guiding his actions and relationships.
DJ was also an avid Carolina Gamecock fan, passionately supporting his alma mater’s teams. His love for sports extended beyond football; he enjoyed playing team tennis at Lexington Tennis Center, where he was known for his friendly competitiveness and camaraderie. In addition, DJ found joy in woodworking, traveling to new places, and sharing quality time with friends and family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Anna Mills Polatty Cox; his precious daughter, Mary-Elizabeth Cox; his parents, Dennis and Kim Cox of Greenwood; his grandparents, Judy and Skip Bidwell, and Velma Cox; his brother, Cory Cox, and sister-in-law, Jennifer, of Spartanburg; his niece, Lillian Cox; and nephews Garrett and Liam Cox. DJ also leaves behind his mother- and father-in-law, Jean Ann and Keith Polatty of Greenwood. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Lillian Bidwell and David Cox.
A memorial service honoring DJ’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the First Baptist Church of Columbia, officiated by Rev. Wes Church. Friends and family are invited to gather in Ellis Hall immediately following the service to share memories and celebrate his life. A private graveside service will take place beforehand at Oakbrook Memorial Park in Greenwood.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201, to support the church’s ongoing ministries and community outreach.
DJ’s life was a testament to faith, family, community, and service. His legacy of kindness, leadership, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him. We mourn his loss but also celebrate the profound impact he made in the lives of many.
