The Saint Joseph’s University community is mourning the loss of Chris DiJulia, a cherished figure whose presence on the sidelines of Hawks women’s basketball games became an enduring symbol of dedication, inspiration, and school pride. For more than three decades, DiJulia was a beloved part of the program, witnessing many of its greatest achievements while leaving a lasting impact on players, coaches, and fans alike.
Saint Joseph’s Athletics announced his passing with heartfelt sadness, remembering a man whose enthusiasm and unwavering support helped define the culture of the women’s basketball program. DiJulia first joined the Hawks’ bench after being invited by then-head coach Jim Foster, beginning a remarkable journey that would see him become one of the most recognizable and respected members of the Saint Joseph’s basketball family.
Throughout his years with the program, DiJulia was present for many historic moments. He was part of teams that captured three Atlantic 10 Conference championships, won more than a dozen Philadelphia Big 5 titles, and earned over 20 postseason appearances. While he was not a player or coach in the traditional sense, his influence and support were deeply felt by everyone associated with the team.
Born with cerebral palsy, DiJulia inspired countless people through his positivity, resilience, and infectious spirit. His enthusiasm for Saint Joseph’s basketball and his ability to bring joy to those around him made him a treasured member of the university community. Recognizing the profound impact he had on others, the women’s basketball program established the Chris DiJulia Inspirational Award during the 2001–02 season. The award honors individuals who embody the determination, courage, and uplifting attitude that DiJulia demonstrated throughout his life.
Chris was also the son of longtime Saint Joseph’s athletic director Don DiJulia, further strengthening his deep connection to the university. In recognition of his contributions and enduring legacy, he was inducted into the Saint Joseph’s University Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in the spring of 2018.
As tributes continue to pour in, former players, coaches, and fans are sharing memories of Chris’s kindness, encouragement, and unwavering loyalty to the Hawks. While his passing leaves a tremendous void, his legacy of inspiration and positivity will continue to live on through the award that bears his name and the countless lives he touched.
