A tragic motorcycle crash on the Howard Frankland Bridge early Tuesday morning claimed the life of a 64-year-old Tampa man, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the fatal collision occurred around 4:35 a.m. on May 26, 2026, along the southbound lanes of Interstate 275 near the 35-mile marker. The crash happened during the early morning commute as traffic moved across the heavily traveled bridge connecting Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.
Investigators say the Tampa man was operating a Honda motorcycle in the outside center lane of southbound I-275 when he attempted to change lanes. According to preliminary findings from the Florida Highway Patrol, the motorcycle moved into the path of a Kia Soul traveling in the outside lane.
The Kia was being driven by a 48-year-old woman from Lakewood Ranch.
Authorities said the Kia struck the motorcycle during the lane-change maneuver, causing the rider to suffer catastrophic injuries. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the collision, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Kia was not injured in the crash, and no other injuries were reported.
The fatal accident temporarily disrupted traffic along the Howard Frankland Bridge as law enforcement officers and emergency crews worked to investigate the scene and clear debris from the roadway. Motorists traveling through the area during the early morning hours experienced delays while southbound lanes remained partially affected.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. At this time, troopers have not released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
Fatal motorcycle crashes remain a serious concern across Florida, particularly on major highways and bridges where vehicles travel at higher speeds and lane changes can quickly become dangerous. Safety experts frequently remind both drivers and motorcyclists to remain alert, check blind spots carefully, and allow adequate space between vehicles to reduce the risk of deadly collisions.
The Howard Frankland Bridge, one of the busiest transportation corridors in the Tampa Bay area, has seen numerous serious accidents over the years due to heavy traffic volume and high-speed travel. Tuesday morning’s crash serves as another sobering reminder of how quickly tragedy can unfold on Florida’s roadways.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may be released as troopers continue reviewing evidence and witness accounts related to the crash.
