Family, friends, and community members are coming together in support of Kristy McCarthy and her young daughter, Rose, following the sudden and heartbreaking passing of Ryan McCarthy at just 38 years old. The devastating loss has left loved ones grieving a man remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, talented musician, and cherished friend.

Stepdad is an American electronic/pop band based in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

History

Originally a duo, Stepdad was formed in Chicago, Illinois during the summer of 2009 when Mark Tafel and Ryan McCarthy, who were roommates at the time, began writing songs together in their apartment. They initially gained exposure in early 2010 when they composed a theme song for the popular web comic “Axe Cop”. The duo’s song became the official theme song for the “Axe Cop” comic and motion comic.

In April 2010, the band released their first EP, Ordinaire, independently via Bandcamp. The EP spawned two singles, “Jungles” and “My Leather, My Fur, My Nails”.

In June 2012, Stepdad released their debut LP, Wildlife Pop, under Black Bell Records. The album was recorded with producer Chris Zane. This was followed by the EPs Strange Tonight in 2014 and Masterbeast Theatre in 2016. After releasing Masterbeast Theatre, the band went on hiatus.

In July 2026, the band announced on Facebook that Ryan McCarthy had died at the age of 38.

A fundraiser has been established to help ease the financial burden facing Ryan’s family during this unimaginable time. The funds raised will assist with funeral and memorial expenses, medical bills related to Ryan’s passing, everyday household costs, and provide stability for four-year-old Rose as she navigates life without her father.

Those who knew Ryan describe him as a genuinely kind and compassionate person whose presence could brighten any room. He had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued, often using his quick wit and sense of humor to bring smiles to those around him. Whether among family, friends, or strangers, Ryan left a lasting impression through his warmth and authenticity.

Above all else, Ryan was a devoted family man. He shared a deep and loving bond with his wife, Kristy, whom many describe as his soulmate. Together they built a life centered on love, friendship, and family. His passing has left Kristy facing the heartbreaking reality of raising their daughter alone and moving forward without the partner she expected to spend her life beside.

Ryan’s relationship with Rose was especially special. Friends and family recall a father who adored his daughter and filled her days with laughter, music, and unconditional love. He was her biggest supporter, constant protector, and best friend. The memories they created together will remain a treasured part of her life forever.

Music was another defining part of Ryan’s life. A talented musician, he spent countless hours writing, performing, and creating music with his band, StepDad. His passion for music brought him joy and helped him connect with others in meaningful ways. Many believe continuing to support and celebrate his music is one way to keep his memory alive.

As the family mourns this tremendous loss, they are asking for patience, kindness, and understanding. Funeral arrangements are still being finalized and will be shared when the family feels ready.

In the meantime, the community continues to rally around Kristy and Rose, offering prayers, support, and comfort as they take each day one step at a time. Ryan McCarthy’s legacy of love, laughter, and music will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
