The Back of the Yards community in Chicago is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 17-year-old Pedro Ramirez, a Tilden High School student who was shot and killed Tuesday morning while reportedly on his way to school.

According to police, the deadly shooting occurred around 7:40 a.m. in the 5000 block of South Throop Street. Investigators said multiple armed suspects allegedly exited a dark-colored SUV and opened fire, turning a neighborhood street into a chaotic and devastating crime scene during the early morning hours.

Emergency responders rushed to the area after reports of gunfire and found Pedro Ramirez suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, the teenage student tragically died from his injuries, leaving family members, classmates, teachers, and community residents grieving an unimaginable loss.

Two additional victims, identified as men ages 55 and 61, were also struck during the shooting. Authorities said the injured men managed to drive themselves away from the scene before stopping near 50th Street and Ashland Avenue to seek help. Both victims were transported to local hospitals in critical condition.

Police investigators recovered dozens of shell casings from the scene as detectives worked throughout the day gathering evidence and searching for answers. Authorities later recovered a black Jeep and a rifle following a police chase connected to the investigation. Officials confirmed that a person of interest is currently being questioned while detectives continue working to determine what led to the deadly attack.

Family members described Pedro Ramirez as a dedicated student athlete who was heavily involved in soccer and volleyball at Tilden High School. Loved ones said he stayed focused on school, rarely missed classes, and was committed to building a positive future for himself. Those closest to him are remembering him as a respectful, hardworking teenager whose life was filled with promise and potential.
