Eva Moran Car Accident – Obituary Ohio: The University of Toledo Mourn The Loss Of Freshman Pole Vaulter In Marion County Car Accident

OHIO — The University of Toledo community is mourning the tragic loss of freshman student-athlete Eva Jae Moran, a member of the women’s track and field team, who died Friday following an automobile accident in Marion County, Ohio.

Moran, a promising pole vaulter and health sciences student, had recently completed her first season competing for the Rockets and was quickly making a name for herself both on the track and in the classroom. Her sudden passing has left teammates, coaches, classmates, and family members grieving the loss of a young woman remembered for her determination, kindness, and unwavering positive spirit.

In a statement released by the university, Vice President and Director of Athletics Tom Moreland expressed the institution’s sorrow over Moran’s death.

“The University of Toledo community is heartbroken by the loss of Eva Moran,” Moreland said. “Eva was an outstanding student-athlete whose determination, character and positive spirit made an impact on everyone who had the opportunity to know her.”

Moreland also extended condolences to Moran’s family, including her parents, Alena and Derrek Moran, and her siblings, Maddox, Jaxton, and Kya.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Eva’s parents, Alena and Derrek, and her siblings, Maddox, Jaxton and Kya,” he said. “We ask that everyone keep Eva’s family and those closest to her in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”

Moran’s athletic accomplishments during her freshman campaign demonstrated her potential as one of the program’s rising talents. She concluded the outdoor season by placing 10th in the pole vault at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, recording a personal-best clearance of 3.57 meters. The mark ranks as the sixth-best performance in University of Toledo women’s track and field history.

Throughout the season, Moran continued to improve and establish herself among the conference’s competitive pole vaulters. She earned a third-place finish at the GVSU Big Meet in February with a vault of 3.43 meters and later placed fourth at the 56th Annual GINA Relays in April with a clearance of 3.27 meters.

Before arriving at Toledo, Moran built an impressive athletic résumé at River Valley High School in Caledonia, Ohio. A multi-sport athlete, she participated in basketball, cross country, and track and field while earning recognition as one of the state’s top pole vaulters.

She qualified for the Ohio State Track and Field Championships in the pole vault in 2022, 2023, and 2024, culminating in a fifth-place finish during her senior season. Moran also set the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference pole vault record with a clearance of 12 feet, one-half inch, further cementing her legacy as one of the area’s standout athletes.

University of Toledo Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Andrea Grove-McDonough said Moran’s impact on the program extended far beyond her athletic achievements.

“There are no words to adequately express the sadness our team feels over the loss of Eva,” Grove-McDonough said. “She was a remarkable young woman whose energy, determination and kindness made an immediate impact on our program.”

According to her coach, Moran embraced every opportunity to learn and improve while developing strong relationships with her teammates.

“Eva approached every practice, every competition and every challenge with a positive attitude and a genuine love for her teammates,” Grove-McDonough said. “She was eager to learn, eager to improve and proud to represent the University of Toledo.”

The coach added that Moran’s legacy would continue to inspire those who knew her.

“Our hearts are with Eva’s family, friends, teammates and everyone whose lives she touched. We will continue to honor her memory and the example she set for all of us.”

Moran enrolled at the University of Toledo in 2024 and was pursuing a degree in health sciences while balancing the demands of collegiate athletics. Friends and teammates remember her as a hardworking student and dedicated competitor who approached every aspect of life with enthusiasm and purpose.

As news of her passing spreads across Ohio and the collegiate track and field community, tributes continue to pour in from those who were inspired by her talent, character, and infectious positivity.

The University of Toledo community now joins together in mourning the loss of a promising young athlete whose life was cut tragically short. While her achievements on the track will be remembered, those closest to her say it is her kindness, determination, and uplifting spirit that will leave the most enduring legacy.

Funeral arrangements and additional memorial information have not yet been publicly announced.
