OMAHA, Neb. — Omaha police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that claimed the lives of two adults Wednesday afternoon near Lake Cunningham, adding to a tragic day that saw multiple deadly incidents unfold across the city.
Officers and emergency responders were dispatched shortly after 3:30 p.m. to a residence near 82nd Avenue and Bondesson Street following reports of a violent incident. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a man deceased at the scene and a woman suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Emergency personnel immediately began life-saving measures on the woman before transporting her to a local hospital with CPR in progress. Despite the efforts of first responders and medical staff, she later succumbed to her injuries.
Following a preliminary investigation, Omaha police announced that the case is being investigated as an apparent murder-suicide. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the individuals involved, pending notification of family members and the continuation of investigative procedures.
Police also confirmed that two children were removed from the residence during the incident. Officials stated the children were taken into protective custody and are being cared for while investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Authorities have not indicated that the children were physically harmed.
The scene remained active for several hours as investigators gathered evidence, interviewed potential witnesses, and worked to reconstruct the events leading up to the deaths. Detectives and crime scene technicians were observed processing the area late into the evening.
The incident near Lake Cunningham was one of several major emergencies that occurred across Omaha on Wednesday, creating an exceptionally difficult day for first responders, law enforcement personnel, and city officials.
In addition to the apparent murder-suicide, Omaha police responded to two separate shooting incidents and a fatal apartment fire. Collectively, the events resulted in six deaths within a single day, prompting city leaders to address the community regarding the unprecedented series of tragedies.
During a media briefing, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer provided an update on the ongoing investigations and acknowledged the emotional toll the incidents have had on both residents and emergency responders.
Mayor John Ewing Jr. and Chief Schmaderer later issued a joint statement expressing sympathy for the victims and their families while emphasizing that the events, though deeply troubling, do not reflect broader crime trends within the city.
“Omaha is a safe city with low homicide and violent crime rates,” the statement read. “But today is a profoundly sad and difficult one. In the span of a single day, our city has lost six individuals: four to apparent murder-suicides, one to a shooting and one to a fire.”
City leaders said investigators continue working diligently to determine exactly what occurred in each case and promised to provide additional information as facts become available.
The statement also acknowledged the broader impact such incidents have on the community, noting that acts of violence affect not only immediate family members but also neighbors, friends, coworkers, classmates, and first responders who are exposed to traumatic events.
“We grieve alongside all who experienced the shock of what occurred today,” city officials stated. “We want to let you—and others in crisis know—that Omaha cares for you.”
