The collegiate football landscape and the tight-knit gridiron community of Westchester County are mourning the tragic and deeply sudden loss of Louis “Lou” DiRienzo. A revered defensive strategist, elite Division I assistant coach, and former standout student-athlete, Lou passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the age of 37.
Louis DiRienzo G’18 will embark on his fifth season as the defensive coordinator for the Springfield College football program in 2024. In 2023, DiRienzo was chosen as the Gridiron Club of New England’s Division II/III Co-Assistant Coach of the Year as Springfield won its third-straight conference title. In 2022, DiRienzo’s defense surrendered just 17 points per game as the Pride repeated as NEWMAC Champions and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship Sweet 16 for the first time since 2006.
In 2021, DiRienzo’s defense allowed just 18 points per game and 295 yards of total offense to its opponents as the Pride claimed the NEWMAC title and earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
DiRienzo returns to Springfield College after previously serving as the special teams quality control coach at Rutgers University and the outside linebackers coach at Wagner College. Prior to his time with Wagner College, DiRienzo spent two years as a graduate assistant at Springfield College, where he served as co-special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 2017 after coaching the Pride defensive backs in 2016. His work with the 2017 Springfield squad helped the Pride win the inaugural New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship as the team earned a 10-0 undefeated regular season regular and reached the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for the first time since 2006.
DiRienzo was a student-athlete at Southern Connecticut State University, where he was a team captain as a senior in 2015. A native of Yonkers, N.Y., he was also a standout high school football player at New Rochelle High School where he was an all-state, all-county, all-section and all-league player. DiRienzo earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from SCSU in 2016 and a Masters of physical education degree from Springfield in 2018.
A native of Yonkers who became a legendary figure at New Rochelle High School, Lou was widely known as a brilliant defensive mastermind. He achieved significant regional acclaim leading Springfield College to historic heights before recently climbing the ranks to Division I coaching roles at Monmouth, Rutgers, and Wagner universities.
Lou’s football legacy began on the fields of New Rochelle High School, where his immense physicality and innate leadership skills earned him All-State, All-County, All-Section, and All-League accolades. Recognized as one of the most dominant defenders of his era, he was also voted to the prestigious Third-Team All-Decade roster for New York high school athletics and served as senior team captain.
He carried that relentless work ethic to Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), where he anchored the Owls’ defense as a 220-pound linebacker and dedicated special teams player from 2010 to 2015. Known for his tactical understanding of the game, his peers elected him team captain during his redshirt senior campaign. Lou graduated from SCSU in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, immediately transitioning his passion for the sport into a full-time coaching career.
Lou possessed a rare gift for translating complex defensive schemes into masterclasses of execution, building defensive units that suffocated opposing run games.
