CAMDEN COUNTY, Mo. — A Laquey woman died after a motorcycle crash in Camden County that occurred when the rider attempted to avoid a deer that entered the roadway, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The victim has been identified as Laura McLinn-West, 48, of Laquey, who succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The motorcycle’s operator, Dave West, also of Laquey, was injured and remains under medical care.
According to a preliminary crash report released by the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the collision occurred Sunday evening on Route A, approximately 1,003 feet east of Rainwater Drive, east of Camdenton.
Investigators said a 2010 Harley-Davidson Ultra Glide was traveling eastbound when a deer suddenly entered its path. In an effort to avoid striking the animal, the rider lost control of the motorcycle, causing it to crash. Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the motorcycle during the incident.
Laura McLinn-West sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by medical helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia, where she later died Monday morning despite lifesaving efforts.
Dave West suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Lake Regional Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released an update on his condition.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash. At this time, troopers have not identified any contributing factors beyond the deer entering the roadway, and the investigation remains active.
Officials noted that Laura McLinn-West’s death marks Troop F’s 35th traffic fatality of 2026, underscoring the continuing importance of roadway safety, particularly on rural highways where encounters with wildlife can occur without warning.
Motorists traveling through wooded and rural areas are encouraged to remain alert, especially during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours when deer are most active. Wildlife-related crashes are common throughout Missouri and can pose significant risks to motorcyclists due to the limited protection afforded by their vehicles.
