The Gulfport community is mourning the tragic loss of 19-year-old Nykel Poole, who was killed in a shooting that also left two other individuals critically injured. The incident has brought grief to family, friends, and residents as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the deadly violence.
According to the Gulfport Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of 20th Street and 32nd Avenue at approximately 8:45 p.m. Monday. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Nykel Poole suffering from what investigators believe was a single gunshot wound.
Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer confirmed that Poole was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 8:55 p.m. His unexpected passing has left loved ones mourning the loss of a young man whose life was tragically cut short.
Two additional victims were also found suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was transported by air to a hospital for emergency medical care, while another was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital. Both victims remain in critical condition as they continue receiving treatment.
During the investigation, authorities determined that the shooting allegedly involved a dispute connected to narcotics between the suspect and one of the victims. Police later arrested 34-year-old John Gaddis III of Gulfport without incident.
Gaddis has been charged with one count of first-degree murder in connection with Nykel Poole’s death and two counts of aggravated assault involving the two injured victims. He is currently being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center on a $2 million bond while the case proceeds through the legal system.
As investigators continue working to uncover additional details, the Gulfport community is remembering Nykel Poole for the life he lived and the people who knew and cared for him. At just 19 years old, Poole’s future was tragically taken away, leaving family and friends facing the pain of an unimaginable loss.
