PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — A Prairie Village community is mourning the loss of a young student and athlete after a fifth-grader who was critically injured in a car crash while traveling to a soccer tournament died days later, according to school officials.
Annie Koester, a fifth-grade student at St. Ann Catholic School, passed away Saturday evening after remaining on life support following the July 15 crash, the school announced in a statement shared on social media.
The accident occurred while Annie and her family were traveling to Nashville for a youth soccer tournament. Details regarding the circumstances of the crash have not yet been publicly released.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has kept Annie and the Koester family in your prayers,” St. Ann Catholic School said in its statement.
Community Rallies Around Koester Family
The news of Annie’s death has prompted an outpouring of support from friends, classmates, parishioners, and members of the Kansas City soccer community.
A fundraising campaign established to assist the Koester family quickly gained momentum, raising more than $26,000 within the first 24 hours of its launch.
The fundraiser was organized by Alec Bethurum, who described the family as deeply involved and supportive members of the community.
“The Koesters represent the very best of us,” Bethurum wrote. “They are an amazing family who would do anything for their friends, neighbors, and community.”

School officials announced that the 5 p.m. Sunday Mass at St. Ann Catholic Church would be dedicated to Annie’s memory.

“The Koesters have been a valued part of our club for many years and have consistently supported those around them, both on and off the field,” the club said.
