HUMBLE, Texas — A large law enforcement response descended on Deerbrook Mall on Saturday after reports of a possible active shooter prompted a lockdown, forcing shoppers to evacuate the popular shopping centre.
Authorities responded after receiving reports that a gunshot had been fired inside the mall. Deputies, police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel quickly arrived at the scene as officers secured the building and directed shoppers and employees to evacuate.
Officials have confirmed that one person was injured during the incident. The victim received medical attention, although authorities have not yet released information regarding the severity of the injuries or the individual’s identity.
The mall was placed on lockdown while law enforcement officers conducted a systematic search of the property to determine whether there was any ongoing threat. Authorities have not yet confirmed what led to the shooting or whether the incident was targeted.
One shopper described the frightening moments that unfolded while shopping for back-to-school supplies.
“I took Brooke to Deerbrook Mall for some back-to-school shopping and someone fired a gun and cleared out the mall. We ran into a store with other people but got kicked out because they were shutting down their metal grates. Police, Sheriff, EMS and fire trucks are all over the parking lot.”
Videos and photographs shared on social media showed a significant emergency presence surrounding the shopping centre, with numerous patrol vehicles, ambulances, and fire apparatus stationed throughout the parking areas while officers continued to investigate.
Authorities urged the public to avoid the area during the response as investigators worked to secure the scene and gather evidence.
At this stage, officials have not announced whether a suspect has been identified or taken into custody. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
