The Grand Haven Township, Michigan, community is grieving an unimaginable tragedy following the deaths of Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, her husband Kristopher Michael Karolkiewicz, and their six children after a house fire on Friday morning. The devastating loss has left family, friends, colleagues, students, and neighbors heartbroken as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The victims were identified as Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 41, and their six children, who ranged in age from approximately 5 to 15 years old. Officials said the family was found inside their Riverside Trail home after firefighters responded to reports of smoke coming from the residence.
Amanda Karolkiewicz was a cherished educator within Grand Haven Area Public Schools, where she served as a premier substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary School. She had also previously taught third grade at Sugar Mill Elementary School, earning the admiration of students, parents, and fellow educators throughout her career.
School officials remembered Mandy as an educator who led with compassion, patience, and genuine care for every child who entered her classroom.
“Mandy loved her students, especially when they were having a hard day, responding with empathy, patience, and care,” the district shared in a statement. “She poured her heart into her work, was always willing to help wherever needed, and helped make Peach Plains a better place to learn and work.”
Friends and colleagues described her as someone who dedicated her life to helping children succeed both academically and emotionally, creating classrooms where students felt safe, encouraged, and valued.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, firefighters initially responded to the area around 8:30 a.m. after reports of the smell of smoke but were unable to locate its source. Later, at approximately 11:40 a.m., emergency crews returned after receiving additional reports of smoke coming from the family’s home.
Firefighters entered the residence to extinguish the fire and discovered the eight family members deceased inside. Authorities later confirmed that several victims had sustained gunshot wounds, and investigators are examining the possibility of a murder-suicide. Officials have stressed that the investigation remains active and that a final determination has not yet been made.
The Michigan State Police Arson Investigation Team is assisting in determining the cause and origin of the fire. Authorities also confirmed that two family dogs were found deceased inside the residence.
The loss has shaken the Grand Haven community, particularly the school district where Mandy’s kindness and dedication touched countless lives. Counseling resources have been made available for students, staff, and families as they process the tragedy.
