A Jewish-owned café in Toronto was targeted by gunfire early Sunday morning, leaving the local Jewish community shaken and prompting a major police investigation involving the Toronto Police Service Hate Crime Unit and the Gun and Gang Task Force.
The incident occurred at Kiva’s, a well-known Jewish café where families regularly gather for coffee, bagels, and brunch. Customers arriving Sunday morning were met with shattered windows, police tape, and an active crime scene after bullets struck the business overnight.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the attack has sparked widespread concern throughout Toronto’s Jewish community.
In a statement following the shooting, community leaders said the incident represents more than damage to property—it is an attack that has left many residents feeling unsettled.
“Everyone in Toronto should be able to go to work, open a business, meet a friend, or have brunch with their family without fear,” the statement read. “Jewish Torontonians should not have to wonder whether the places where we gather openly and proudly will be the next targets of violence or intimidation.”
Authorities responded quickly to the scene, and investigators from both the Hate Crime Unit and the Gun and Gang Task Force are working to determine the motive behind the shooting. Police have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The United Jewish Appeal (UJA) and the Jewish Security Network (JSN) confirmed they are working closely with law enforcement while supporting the affected business and the broader community.
Despite the attack, community leaders emphasized that they will not be intimidated.
“We will continue to support Jewish businesses. We will continue to gather. We will continue to live openly as Jews in this city,” the statement continued. “Our community is shaken, but we are not retreating. Jewish life in Toronto will remain visible, vibrant, resilient, and strong.”
Police are asking anyone with information, surveillance footage, or dashcam video from the area to contact investigators as efforts continue to identify those responsible.
