A devastating murder-suicide in Grand Haven Township has left a family of eight dead, including a mother and her six children, after investigators said the father killed his family before taking his own life. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, died by suicide. His wife, Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children were victims of homicide. Authorities said autopsies determined that all eight family members died from gunshot wounds.
The sheriff’s office did not release the children’s names but confirmed their ages and genders. The children included a 5-year-old boy, an 11-year-old boy, two 11-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy, and a 15-year-old boy. Officials said two of the children were adopted. The tragedy was discovered Friday morning after firefighters responded to reports of smoke coming from the family’s home on Riverside Trail near 148th Avenue and Mercury Drive in Grand Haven Township. While battling the fire, crews found the bodies inside the residence.
Investigators said the fire appeared to have been intentionally started in several locations throughout the home after the shootings. Deputies said evidence showed the incident was a murder-suicide, with the fire being set afterward. The family’s pets also died in the blaze. The deaths have shocked the Grand Haven community, where neighbors, classmates, and friends gathered Sunday evening for a vigil to honor the family.
Those who knew the children remembered them as kind, funny, and caring. One student described one of the children as someone who could make people laugh and was loved by those around him. Amanda Karolkiewicz was remembered as a compassionate person who made a positive impact on others.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools released a statement offering support to students and families affected by the tragedy. Amanda Karolkiewicz had worked as a frequent substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary.
“Our Buccaneer family grieves alongside all those impacted by this tremendous loss,” Superintendent Kristin Perkowski said.
Counselors were made available to help students, neighbors, and community members as the area continues to mourn the heartbreaking loss of the Karolkiewicz family. The investigation into the fire and circumstances surrounding the tragedy remains ongoing.
