SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — An 18-year-old Pottsville woman was killed and four other teenagers were injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday evening on Burma Road near Firetower Road, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
The crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. north of New Philadelphia. Investigators said a Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 19-year-old, was traveling along Burma Road when it entered a sharp left-hand curve, lost traction, and crossed the center line into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer.
The tractor-trailer struck the Malibu head-on, causing extensive damage to the passenger vehicle.
Authorities identified the deceased passenger as Alexandria Womer, 18, of Pottsville. She sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Malibu, along with a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old passenger, all from Pottsville, suffered serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. A 14-year-old passenger from Port Carbon sustained minor injuries.
Pennsylvania State Police from the Frackville station are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators are examining factors including road conditions, vehicle speed, and any possible mechanical issues to determine what caused the driver to lose control.
The crash has left the Pottsville community mourning the loss of Womer while family members and friends await updates on the condition of the injured teenagers. Authorities have not released additional information as the investigation remains ongoing.
