CROSS JUNCTION, Va. — The Cross Junction community is mourning the loss of Lary L. Cave Jr., a 55-year-old resident who died in a highway crash Tuesday afternoon, leaving family, friends, and neighbors grieving the sudden tragedy.
According to authorities, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 3:05 p.m. on July 28, 2026, along Northwestern Pike (U.S. Route 50), east of Capon Bridge near the intersection with Sirbaugh Road.
Investigators reported that Cave was traveling westbound in a 2009 Volvo when traffic ahead slowed as another vehicle prepared to make a turn. Preliminary findings indicate that Cave was unable to stop in time to avoid the developing situation. His vehicle subsequently left the right side of the roadway, struck a metal guardrail, and continued into a large tree stump before coming to rest.
The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicle and prompted a rapid response from emergency personnel. Firefighters, emergency medical services, and sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene within minutes and worked to provide lifesaving assistance. Despite their efforts, Cave was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation as authorities continue examining the circumstances leading up to the collision. Officials have not released additional information regarding contributing factors.
