According to authorities, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 3:05 p.m. on July 28, 2026, along Northwestern Pike (U.S. Route 50), east of Capon Bridge near the intersection with Sirbaugh Road.

Investigators reported that Cave was traveling westbound in a 2009 Volvo when traffic ahead slowed as another vehicle prepared to make a turn. Preliminary findings indicate that Cave was unable to stop in time to avoid the developing situation. His vehicle subsequently left the right side of the roadway, struck a metal guardrail, and continued into a large tree stump before coming to rest.

The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicle and prompted a rapid response from emergency personnel.
