LABETTE COUNTY, Kan. — Two southeast Kansas residents were killed Wednesday afternoon in a head-on collision involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 59, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The victims were identified as Ryan J. Myers, 38, of Altamont, who was operating a 1999 Harley-Davidson XL883 motorcycle, and Samantha A. Cahow, 30, of Parsons, who was riding as a passenger. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m., about two miles northeast of Altamont. Preliminary findings from the Kansas Highway Patrol indicate the motorcycle was traveling northbound when it crossed the center line into the southbound lane for reasons that remain under investigation.
Authorities said the motorcycle collided head-on with a 2020 Jeep Gladiator driven by Shaun T. Powell, 55, of Fort Scott. Investigators reported that Powell attempted to avoid the collision by steering to the right, but the vehicles struck each other before the crash could be avoided.
The impact ejected both Myers and Cahow from the motorcycle. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the crash report, neither Myers nor Cahow was wearing a helmet or eye protection at the time of the collision. Powell sustained suspected minor injuries, while his passenger, Lucas A. Kelley, 27, was not injured. Both occupants of the Jeep were wearing seat belts.
The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
