ATLANTA, Georgia — Authorities have identified the victim and suspect involved in a fatal stabbing aboard a MARTA train that has sparked renewed concerns about safety across Atlanta’s public transportation system.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 66-year-old Margaret Swan of Atlanta. Swan died following a stabbing incident that occurred Saturday aboard a MARTA train near the Oakland City Station.
According to MARTA Police, the suspect has been identified as 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews. Authorities confirmed that Matthews has been arrested and is facing murder charges in connection with Swan’s death. Investigators have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the attack.
The fatal stabbing occurred in broad daylight, leaving many commuters shaken and raising questions about rider safety on one of the region’s busiest transit networks.
News of the incident spread quickly throughout the city, prompting reactions from passengers who rely on MARTA as part of their daily routine. “It doesn’t feel as safe as it should be,” one rider, Venus, told local media following the incident. “There is a little cause for concern.”

“We’re getting a lot of tourists and a lot of people moving here from different places,” said commuter Djimon Tabannah. “When something like this happens, people notice it.”
Tabannah and other riders suggested that a stronger security presence throughout the MARTA system could help reassure passengers and deter criminal activity.
“Be more attentive and more strict on who you let in here,” he said. “We’re all paying customers, we all live here, and we’re supposed to protect each other as a community.”
Saturday’s fatal stabbing comes amid a series of recent violent incidents connected to MARTA facilities. Just days earlier, a man was stabbed multiple times at the Georgia State MARTA Station. That victim survived and continues to recover from his injuries.
In another high-profile case earlier this year, a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot at the Oakland City MARTA Station—the same station connected to Saturday’s deadly stabbing. The incident drew widespread attention and renewed discussions about public safety measures within Atlanta’s transit system.
Despite these incidents, MARTA officials note that agency statistics show overall crime trends have declined. Nevertheless, some passengers argue that statistics alone do little to ease fears when violent crimes occur in public spaces frequented by thousands of commuters every day.
