CASSELBERRY, Fla. — A suspected fentanyl trafficker is expected to face criminal charges after allegedly fleeing law enforcement and crashing into another vehicle Tuesday afternoon in Casselberry, killing two people, according to authorities.
The deadly collision occurred shortly after Seminole County deputies attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle in Sanford. Investigators say the pursuit never escalated into a traditional high-speed chase, as deputies chose not to pursue the fleeing driver on the ground due to concerns over public safety. Instead, law enforcement monitored the vehicle from the air until the fatal crash occurred.
According to a statement released by the Casselberry Police Department, the incident began at approximately 11:51 a.m. when deputies with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop near 25th Street and State Road 417 in Sanford. Authorities said the driver, who was suspected of trafficking fentanyl, refused to stop and fled the area.
Rather than engage in a dangerous vehicle pursuit, the sheriff’s office discontinued any ground chase. Officials said deputies relied on the agency’s Aviation Unit, which maintained continuous aerial surveillance of the suspect’s vehicle from a safe distance while minimizing the risk to motorists and pedestrians.
Investigators said the suspect continued driving southbound along U.S. Highway 17-92, reportedly reaching speeds of more than 100 miles per hour as he entered Casselberry.
Just after 12:04 p.m., the fleeing vehicle collided with another car near Sunnytown Lane in what authorities described as a devastating crash.
The impact proved fatal for the two occupants of the other vehicle, who suffered catastrophic injuries and were pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims pending notification of their families.
The suspect survived the collision and was taken into custody at the scene without further incident. Officials said the individual was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Information regarding the suspect’s condition has not been released.
The Casselberry Police Department has launched a traffic homicide investigation to determine the full sequence of events leading to the fatal collision. Investigators are expected to examine vehicle speeds, roadway evidence, surveillance footage, witness statements, and other factors as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Authorities indicated that criminal charges against the suspect are forthcoming. While the specific charges have not yet been announced, officials said they are expected to reflect both the alleged drug trafficking investigation that prompted the attempted traffic stop and the fatal crash that followed.
The incident has renewed attention on the dangers posed by drivers who flee from law enforcement, particularly at excessive speeds through heavily traveled roadways.
